Why is Mitigation and Resilience Important?
- Loss of Life: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that in the US, tornadoes alone cause an average of 70 fatalities and 1,500 injuries per year. Natural and man leveraged disasters can result in significant loss if communities are not adequately prepared.
- Economic Impact: Disasters have substantial economic consequences, both in terms of immediate damage and long-term recovery costs. The National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) estimates that the US experienced 22 weather and climate disasters in 2020, each with losses exceeding $1 billion, totaling approximately $95 billion in damages.
